Are you ready for real adventure?
Many years ago my good friend convinced John and me along with two of our kids to do a “short” 15-mile backpacking trip down the Escalante River.
Our very first backpacking ever. Actually spending a couple of nights in the backcountry, carrying ALL the gear we needed.
Of course, we learned a great deal on that first trip.
The least not being, I needed better footwear. A couple of miles from the end the arches in my feet went out. I could barely walk.
-Warning- Big brag on my husband here - He strapped his huge backpack on his back then put my large pack on his front and hustled them to our waiting cars at the end of the trail.
Then, he beat it back to me, and Carried me out on his back!
Those were the days. Young, invincible, and we both weighed a lot less…… sigh.
Horrible experience you might say.
But my point of telling you this story is that the Escalante River hike is SO BEAUTIFUL we have gone back time and again.
Just went again two weeks ago. We get better every time, and so it seems, does the beauty.
My youngest son, Ben, recently got engaged to a lovely German girl, Johanna. She finally got to come to the States for the first time in September. Ben wanted to give her a real Southern Utah experience. So of course we chose the Escalante River.
We spent two nights camping doing the Escalante and then four more days in Kanab having a whirlwind tour of everything possible we could pack in.
It was such a fantastic experience to see our landscapes through Joanna's brand new eyes! A tender reminder of the many beauties we take for granted.
She said things like - “ Where am I? This is not the planet I was born to.” “This is SO big. I do not have a word to describe this.”
We taught her the word “vast”. She used it a lot.
It was so beautiful she cried.
More than once.
