Not really ugly at all, but definitely off the beaten path.
A few months ago (Oct. newsletter) I promised to tell you a little more about our whirlwind tour with my son's German fiance (note: they were able to get married this month in Germany, Yay! We had to watch on a video phone call instead of being there, Boo! Boo hoo hoo….😢).
We packed a ton into a few days and ended up with a quick unplanned stop at Kodachrome Basin, One of Utah's amazing State parks.
We had not visited Bryce Canyon yet with Johanna, but told her Kodachrome was kind of like “Bryce's ugly stepsister”. We spent just over an hour there and did my favorite hike - Angels Palace Trail. Once again Johanna looked at us in amazement - “Ugly stepsister? What more could Bryce possibly be after THIS??”.
This underappreciated park would be THE major attraction of the area if Bryce Canyon was not just 20 miles down the road. The colors are amazing (hence the name) and there are about 70, amazing monolithic spires, some up to 170 feet tall!
My girlfriends and I returned to Kodachrome in January (no snow for our annual ski trip to Bryce so we went hiking instead) and did the longer Panorama hike. A 3-6 Mile, a mostly flat loop that includes a little side trail into “Cool Cave”. Which really is very cool, in every sense of the word. See my super short video clip of Kodachrome including Cool Cave - Here
When you are looking to get away from the crowds, we love to recommend this quiet park tucked just off Highway 12, South East of Bryce Canyon National Park.
Bring your own bikes, or try an easy horseback trail ride from Red Canyon Trail Rides. Really reasonable rates - Here
Day-Use Fee: $10 per vehicle (max. 8 people per vehicle)
