Alright, which one of you, my human siblings, ticked off Mama Nature? ‘Cause, she has been in an uproar lately.

This June and July we have had some extremes. Heat waves, fires, and floods have all been in our news. But in spite of all of that, I cannot deny that this HOW and WHY we have this beautiful landscape that surrounds us.

Heat, cold, wind, and water are constantly carving, crashing, and shaping. Even though we see our landscapes as timeless.

Our high mountain deserts do not bloom gloriously by continued overgrowth, periodic fires give not only heartache but beautiful rebirth.

Zion Canyon was not majestically formed by standing still, there is always something moving and, water is her strongest force.

Flash floods are REAL.

So my advice for you, my traveling friends, is:

Bryce Canyon may have closed trails because of rockfalls - this is WHY the canyon is so amazing. There are lots of other trails to see on your visit.
It may be raining in Zion Canyon - Embrace those days and watch creation in the process. Heed all weather warnings, no matter how ridiculous it may seem at the time.
Even beyond normal fire safety, please be very conscious of sparks caused by dragging trailer chains and flat tires. When you smell smoke in the wind, remember things will bloom again.

Local teen lifeguard saves man's life at Jackson Flat Reservoir

I loved this story from our small-town newspaper.

Quick summary - Soon-to-be High School Senior and city pool lifeguard, Nick and friends come upon a man stumbling around near the lake. Man (Giddings) passes out. Kids can’t wake him up or find a pulse. Nick starts CPR. A stranger comes and helps Nick with CPR. Friends call 911. EMTs arrive, Nick continues chest compressions. A defibrillator was brought out but got a “No shock advised” signal.

And here is where I will quote the “Southern Utah News”, our local paper -

“As things were not improving, and there continued to be no pulse detected, the stranger who came over and had started helping Nick before the EMTs arrived, suggested that they say a prayer to help Giddings breathe. A few seconds later Giddings got right up, started pulling the oxygen off, and seemed confused as to where he was, thinking he had just woken up from a nap. The team explained what had happened and said they were taking him to the hospital to be examined, but all he wanted to do was go back to fishing!”

I LOVE small town USA.
